Focus-Variation for surface measurement in research and production - Area based measurements including measurement uncertainty information

Focus-Variation is an area based technique for 3D surface measurement in highest vertical resolution.  Form and roughness are measured with a measurement point density of up to 100 mil measurement points. Results are repeatable and traceable. The technology makes use of the limited depth of focus of an optic. Focus-Variation is included in the most recent EN ISO standard 25178.

Measurement results are always composed of both measurement value and the measurement uncertainty. Focus-Variation adds information about the estimated repeatability to each 3D measure point. With every measurement value, users receive an estimated measurement uncertainty. That increases quality and validity of the measurement value.
